Dress for Sucess

Posted by Style Advisor on October 30th, 2007

It is a well known fact that people subconsciously form a opinion about whom they meet within the first 30 seconds. As such, appearance and dressing plays a huge role in giving a good first impression. It is all about looking the part when you’re in a great shirt and tie and projecting the right image - and this article is meant to help you look like a million bucks!

Look The Part

One cannot run away from it. You should always dress according to the type of job you hold. Take for example, if you hold a conservative career, it means you have to dress conservatively. So, it’s suits for the men. On the other hand, laid back and casual wardrobe are fine for liberal professions.

Dress For The Climate

During summer, suits can be replaced with long sleeve shirts and a tie. Choose lighter fabrics and lighter colours instead.

Team Up With The Right Tie

This is a no brainer : Your tie should always match your shirt. So, take great care when choosing your tie. Solid colour and striped ties are the essentials in a man’s business wardrobe as they are stylish but yet conservative. Designer ties are fine but my personal advice is, do not go for funky ties if you want to be taken seriously.

is one of the secret weapon for success in the job market. If you wish to excel in the workplace, you will need to always look the part and once you’ve conquered the secret of power dressing, you will soon be ahead of the pack!

Like it or not, there will always be occasions when we need to be formally attired such as when attending a wedding function or an important job interview. Hence, every man should own at least one suit in his lifetime.

Not many men wear suits these days on a daily basis - these days you’re lucky if you still get to wear a nice shirt to work! But those who do wear them understand the powerful statement a great quality men’s suit can make. Therefore, knowing how to choose the right suit is important.

    Tailored Suits
Customized to fit a person’s individual body frame and is a better choice than getting one off the rack (provided the tailor knows what he is doing). Tailored suits come with a higher price tag, so it’s up to you to decide if they are worth it.

    Off The Rack Suits
Always readily available and more often than not, designed with the latest trend in mind. Less pricey but the downside is it may not fit as well as a tailored one.

    Single Breasted Suits
This is the most basic style where the front buttons on the suits are arranged in a single straight row. Single breasted men suits have a choice of two or three buttons. Extremely wearable and a great ‘all rounder. If you’re only going to own one suit jacket, you’ll be better off with a single breasted variety. Men's Suits

    Double Breasted Suits
More formal suit, the double breasted suit features an overlapping front panel with two sets of buttons.

    Purpose of the Suit
If you plan to wear a suit several days per week for business purposes, take a good look at the colours, designs and styles. Dark suits are great as they exude power and authority.

On the other hand, if you use suits less frequently, an all purpose suit in navy, grey and black would be an ideal buy. They can be worn to most functions like wedding, funerals, graduations as well as interviews. Remember also to choose timeless classics that will not go out in style.

    Choosing The Right Fabric
Each fabric is different in terms of quality, durability, feel, and price. Despite the vast choices of materials available, a suit made out of wool still stands out as the best in my mind. Wool is robust, drapes well, breathes well and looks good and since I am a strong advocate of suits made of 100% wool, I will not bore you with unnecessary details about other fabrics.

Very SuaveA dress shirt, typically donned for a formal occasion, can be one of the finest garments within your wardrobe. Normally made from lightweight woven pure cotton, they look sharper than your every day shirt and really make you feel special.

Unlike is more demure cousin, the dress shirt has varying features, from side gussets to removable collar bones to a split back yoke to tail hems, there really is a lot going on with such a alluring piece of clothing such as this. However that’s not all, the right accessories can really turn your dress shirt into something almost regal. Ties seem almost too plain to wear with such a shirt (although it is done) and bows ties have commonly been used to step up to the mark and take pride of place on the front of a man’s collar.

Certainly the epitome of sophistication and style when worn, the dress shirt should be saved for the right occasion, there is no point devaluing its charisma by frequent use. You will feel like a king in a dress shirt and why not, you look like one!

    Formal shirts

There has been a turn around in menfolk in recent months. No longer are droves of men, young and old alike embracing the dishevelled, unkempt ‘chilled’ look that we all had to suffer gazing upon. It looks like the formal shirt has made its come back.

To be fair the formal shirt never went away, it just seems to have been hiding for a few months. The outbreak of summer and our constant battering by ‘MTV culture’ has allowed us to all believe that an unwashed, crumpled at worst T-shirt is acceptable apparel in the office! It simply isn’t. How are the young, up and coming, business stars of the future going to be taken seriously in their ‘Simpson’ T-shirt that ordains to be ‘retro’? Once again the answer is very simple, they won’t.

Not to hark on but the answer is very simple, a smart, sharp formal shirt, that is literally it! Don such an item and you gain instant respect, a formal shirt simply demands it. Moreover, with recent photos of A list stars including actor George Clooney, jazz singer Michael Buble, pop superstar Justin Timberlake, and golfing champion Tiger Woods being snapped in what can only be described as a marvellous array of formal shirts, its not hard to see why the ‘college drop-out’ look has finally and thankfully had its day!

As we come closer to ending the year 2007, it seems divorce is everywhere now. No one is immune to the legal headache of saying goodbye to what you thought was the love of your life. I don’t know about you, but when I think of happy people, I picture a couple holding hands and [...]
